Hair Restoration Surgery (FUE, DHI)

Genetic alopecia is the most common type of hair loss in both men and women. The hair follicles most typically subject to fall are in the front and top regions of the scalp. This is not due to any fault on your part, but this type of hair loss is due to the shorter longevity of the hair follicles themselves rather than the scalp shape. In women, balding may occur  in those taking oral contraceptives or after childbirth. Characteristically, there is generalized thinning over the entire scalp, which is more noticeable toward the front, and might extend to the hairline. Hair Restoration Surgery (FUE, DHI) might be the only solution for bthis problem.

Hair loss may affect other parts of the body other than the scalp, such as the eyebrow, moustache, beard, pubic area, and newly closed wounds; leading to an unsightly appearance.

Am I a good candidate for Hair Restoration Surgery (Hair Transplantation) ?

The best candidates for Hair Restoration Surgery (FUE, DHI) are those who have started balding, yet still have 80-90% of their hair left to permit transplantation. Age is not a limiting factor, and Prof Wilson recommends hair transplantation whenever 10-20% of scalp hair is lost. When medical sprays and shampoos fail to stop the hair loss, it might be a good time to consider transplantation.

Hair Transplantation (Hair Restoration Surgery) Consultation

During your consultation, Dr. Wilson would probably like to see previous photographs of you before your hair started falling. He will discuss all your options including non surgical solutions. Then, he will examine your hair and make a note of its type, degree of baldness, rate of hair loss. He will discuss in detail your expectations regarding desired amount of new hair growth. Prof Wilson will also use a special instrument to assess the strength of your hair follicles. In planning the surgery, Dr. Wilson will consider the design and location of the proposed frontal hairline, and avoidance of visible scars. He will plan how to place the hairs with a natural direction, and achieve an even distribution of hair throughout the scalp. He will also anticipate future hair loss, measure donor reserves, and plan the timetable of hair restoration during the upcoming and subsequent transplant sessions.

How is Hair Transplantation (Hair Restoration Surgery) Performed?

Professor Wilson usually uses local anesthesia with sedation for the hair transplantation. The Registered nurse clips the hair in the donor area by an electric razor to a length of 2 mm. Then Prof Wilson and his assistants  harvests a donor horizontal ellipse of scalp from the back of the scalp. Prof Wilson prepares the Hair follicle grafts using an operating microscope, and then inserts them by a special knife in the bald area.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE):

Since 2008, Dr Wilson has been almost exclusively using this technique for Hair Transplantation (Hair Restoration Surgery). This technique of Follicular Unit extraction omits the scar at the back of the scalp and enables harvest more hairs.  Although it consumes more time and costs more,  its results are much superior to the older strip excision technique. Prof Wilson uses a  special instrument to extract the individual hair follicles, one follicle at a time, and deposits them in a special dish. He then trims The hair follicles to follicular units and reimplants them.

Direct Hair Implantation (DHI):

This technique involves implanting each hair follicle one at a time, directly after extracting it. Dr Wilson uses a special “pen”. Technically it is less challenging than the FUE, but has the disadvantage that more hairs may be damaged during the procedure.  Dr Wilson uses it only in select cases.
