Breast Lift Mastopexy Reduction

Breast Lift Mastopexy Reduction (Reduction Mammoplasty) is a surgery that can help women who are not happy or feeling self conscious about the appearance of their breasts. This can be anything from the shape, weight and droop of their breasts. Occasionally, some women may have this type of surgery done to achieve a breast size that is proportionate to the rest of their body.

The surgery is a procedure that removes fat, glandular tissue and skin from the breasts making them smaller and firmer. This surgery can also reduce the size of your areolas and help to restore sagging breasts to give them a more youthful appearance. Some women choose to have breast reduction in order to satisfy their own desire for a smaller bust line. In other cases, back and neck pain arising from having overdeveloped breasts, induces the patient to request treatment. Breast reduction surgery is also used to help improve a person’s self-image and mental well-being. They may find they are not able to join in activities that their peers participate in and hence feel isolated and lonely. Therefore a breast reduction may be to to enable them to join in physical activities and sports.

How is the surgery performed?

Techniques for Breast Reduction (Reduction Mammoplasty) vary but the most common procedure involves an ellipse-shaped incision that circles the areola, extends downward to the natural curve of the crease beneath the breast. The skin from both sides of the breast is brought down and around the areola, shaping the new contour of the breast. Prof. Wilson performs this technique which ends up with the least possible scarring: only a vertical scar and eliminates the troublesome transverse scar resulting from older techniques.

Care after Breast Reduction Surgery:

You will likely  feel a bit of discomfort after the surgery, so the Registered Nurse will offer you incremental pain relief medications.

In a few cases, usually 10 % of patients, Prof Wilson might insert  plastic tubes  to drain any blood away. He usually removes them before you leave the hospital.

Please expect that your breasts will probably be swollen and tender after the surgery. This is perfectly normal and lasts 1-2 weeks.

The Surgical assistant will fit you with a special sports bra at the end of the surgery. This reduces the swelling and helps fashion the breast contour. You will probably need to keep it on for 4-6 weeks after the surgery.

Your stitches will probably dissolve after 10-15 days, so you will not need to have them removed.

Almost all patients can go home the same day after the surgery, except in massive breast reductions. In the latter cases, Prof Wilson might advise that you stay overnight in the hospital.

Risks of Breast Reduction (Reduction Mammoplasty)

Fortunately, significant complications from breast reduction are infrequent.

Following reduction, sometimes the breasts may not be perfectly symmetrical or the nipple height may vary slightly. If desired, minor adjustments can be made at a later time. Permanent loss of sensation in the nipples or breasts may occur rarely. Revision surgery is sometimes helpful in certain instances where incisions may have healed poorly.
